As mental illness soars across the country, health experts recommend screening children as young as age eight for anxiety and depression. Children’s Mercy Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Ayanda Chakawa says early detection is key. She says kids with suicidal idealization or behavior need to be noticed early before the behaviors emerge and there is a tragedy. Chakawa also stated a change in behavior plays a huge factor, saying that if you start to notice your child starting to have a struggle when it comes to managing their feelings, like sadness, anxiety, or worry, that it is a good indicator that something else is going on. Chakawa encourages parents to reach out to their child’s primary care doctor for more information on mental health screenings.
