Your trip to the grocery store got a little cheaper starting yesterday. That’s because yesterday Kansas’ 6.5% food sales tax was cut to 4%. The tax cut only applies to “food and food ingredients,” which includes basic items like bottled water, milk, produce, bread, soft drinks and food that ordinarily requires additional cooking. It also includes dietary supplements and candy. It does not include items like alcohol, tobacco and prepared foods.

It won’t be the last cut Kansans will see in their grocery bill, the tax will drop to 2% in 2024 and then in 2025, the tax on groceries will be completely eliminated. Governor Kelly says she will press the Kansas Legislature to eliminate the entire tax this year and not wait until 2025.
