The New Mexico woman who led authorities on a chase from Emporia to Ottawa last year, will spend 10 years in prison as a result. Rebecca Estrada was sentenced in Franklin County District Court after pleading no contest to one count of aggravated battery on law enforcement. Six other charges, including aggravated battery on law enforcement, aggravated burglary and aggravated assault, and various drug charges, were dismissed.
Estrada was accused of leading the chase through Lyon, Coffey and Osage Counties before stopping in Ottawa. She was also accused of hitting a Franklin County Deputy with her vehicle, forcing the deputy to go to the hospital briefly, and hitting two Lyon County cruisers before getting into an unlocked semi and triggering a nearly four-hour standoff before she was arrested.
There was a concern about human trafficking, as at the time, there were at least 5 illegal immigrants in her vehicle. That charge has not been pursued. Estrada is also charged with fleeing and eluding, interference with law enforcement and other counts in Lyon county.
