At the Garnett City Commission Meeting Tuesday night, January 24, in a discussion about the Transient Guest Tax, Commissioner Mark Lock brought up the question as to why the City of Garnett funds the advertising of certain groups within the city, specifically, the Chamber Players Community Theatre, a local dinner theatre group. Garnett Tourism Director Tom Emerson, Jr. told commissioners that the Transient Guest Tax is a program from the state level that communities can opt into. It’s a tax on lodging, such as hotel rooms, bed and breakfasts and various inns. The Transient Guest Tax in Garnett is 6% of the total bill. The money is collected by the state from those businesses and then dispersed to the communities. Emerson explains where the funds go from there:

Speaking of the Chamber Players Community Theatre. They are getting ready to present their next show. It’s called “The Pie Ladies”. Reservations are now available at the Thelma Moore Community Playhouse in Garnett.
