The thin layer of ice that covered roads Friday night, February 24th led to a string of accidents around the area. Roads seemed to ice over about 7:30 that evening. From 7:39 to just after 4:00 Saturday morning, Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 9 such incidents, 6 of those on I-35 between Ottawa and Wellsville. Fortunately, only three of those caused injury. Just before 9:00, 18-year-old Cruz Farley , of Ottawa was eastbound on K-68 when he lost control due to the icy conditions, left the roadway and overturned in a field. He suffered minor injuries. Just after 11:00, 21-year-old Brady Enright, of Ottawa was northbound on I-35 when he hit ice and left the roadway and overturned. He also left with minor injuries. Then just before 1:00 Saturday morning, Raymond Crawford was westbound on John Brown Road when he slid off the road and struck a tree, leaving him with a minor injury to his leg.
Other incidents included three at I-35 milepost 200. First just before 8:00 19-year-old Clayton Anderson of Ottawa, at the same time, 21-year-old Aliyah Kirk of Ottawa, then just after 9:00, 67-year-old Patrick Fox, of Shawnee. Two more on I-35, just before 12:30 34-year-old Robert Larabee, of Broken Arrow and then later, just before 5:, Katherine Miller, of Lenexa. Also, about 9:00 Friday night, Joseph Zamora was traveling west on K-68, hit some ice and struck a bridge.
