A new scholarship at Ottawa High School will honor a student that was killed in a car accident. Seventeen year-old Madison Brooks, a senior at Ottawa High School, died when the pickup truck she was a passenger in left the roadway and rolled over in the area of Kentucky Road and Kingman Terrace in early March of 2021. She was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

To bring awareness to seatbelt safety, her family has teamed up with the Ottawa High School “SAFE” program, which stands for Seatbelts Are for Everyone, to create the Madison Brooks Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is open to any senior at Ottawa High. Her family encourages everyone to talk to those you love about wearing seatbelts every time they are in a vehicle. On a social media post they say you never know when or if you might get in a wreck and it might just be that one time you were only going a couple miles and thought you didn’t need it. Remind your kids they are not invincible. Wearing a seatbelt most of the time or even 99% of the time isn’t enough though. Even if you are only driving in town or if you are only going a couple miles please remember that it only takes a split second for something to happen.

Please remind your kids the importance of driving safely, buckling up and never let a day go by that you don’t let them know how loved they are.

You can find information on the Ottawa scholarship page. You can find a link to that page on the KOFO Facebook page.
