Yet another invasive species is causing a stir in Florida and this time, the critter’s name evokes a certain holiness. The creature, commonly known as the “Jesus Christ Lizard” for its ability to run on water, has cometh — and according to scientists, Floridians should not wanteth. Unlike Jesus, however, officials warn that they have the potential to destroy habitat by eating native butterflies and other animals leading to habitat destruction. Where did they come from? Scientists say they are likely a discarded pets that have reproduced at a fast rate and are spreading north. Another concern is they may threaten humans. They are not aggressive, but do carry mosquito borne diseases.

But the righteous reptiles, starting in southern Florida, have turned up as far north as the Georgia/Florida line recently and look to spread even further north in the coming years.
