Well, the taxman is calling and with the filing deadline now less than three weeks away, it also means scammers are working hard to get your money. KOFO has tips to help you safely file your taxes and avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

First, be on alert for phishing emails and fraudulent callers. the IRS NEVER initiates contact with taxpayers or requests personal financial information through email or by telephone.

When using a tax-preparer, make sure it’s one authorized by the IRS. Ask for their Preparers Tax Identification Number.

As much as everyone loves a tax refund, avoid those who guarantee them or don’t make you prove deductions with receipts.

Finally, always obtain a copy of your completed return and double check that the information is correct — especially your bank information, if you expect a refund via direct deposit.
