The Kansas Bureau of Investigation continues its investigation into the suspicious letters sent to about 100 Republican Legislators and public officials this past week. In on ongoing effort to find out who is behind the letters, the KBI says that the investigation has now expanded beyond Kansas, so the FBI will now be the agency leading the investigation going forward. They report that letters were also sent to former President Donald Trump and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and other high profile individuals. Many of those were intercepted before being delivered.
Since the first letters were handled and reported by officials, the KBI had over 60 special agents, forensic scientists and employees devoted to safely collecting or screening evidence, or managing and tracking response to the incidents. Also, 17 hazmat teams and 12 bomb squads responded across the state. The KBI reminds the public to be vigilant when handling mail and to report any letters containing an unknown substance to law enforcement immediately.
