The Garnett Police Department is warning people about a new scam involving the lottery. Recently a person in Garnett reviewed a piece of mail that appeared to be from the Mega Millions Lottery. Very official, looked legit, but it was a scam. The letter told the person they had won a sweepstakes drawing and had won over three million dollars, and then outlined how the money would be delivered to them in the form of a certified check. The only catch? To claim the money, they had to pay what was called a final fee. That fee was $70,000.
An alert resident called the Garnett Police and the responding officer was able to stop their check from being paid, saving the person $10,000. They urge you to talk to your parents and grand parents about theses scams and keep them safe.
Remember, no legit lottery will make you pay a fee to receive your money. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you feel you have been scammed by this scheme or in any other way, contact your local law enforcement department.
