The Franklin County Sheriff Department has taken quite a few calls lately reporting scams about various legal items. They want to remind you that law enforcement will never call to tell you a warrant was issued for your arrest, and request you pay a third party in the form of gift cards or money transfers to remove the warrant. Bonds for warrants are only paid by cash in person, or by a bondsman. If you receive these calls, simply hang up. Do not give them any of your personal information/bank account information.
A majority of the time, these scam groups are from foreign countries, and it limits what local law enforcement can accomplish if you take a loss. Scammers are also now able to make their phone number appear as if it is a legitimate law enforcement agency on caller ID.
Again, hang up the phone! Then you are encouraged to call the dispatch center non-emergency line of the law enforcement agency they claimed to represent to confirm it was a scam, and make a report.
