With the designation of the trails that go through Ottawa as state parks, the importance of policing the trails and taking care of people along the trails became very important. The Ottawa Police Department founded “VIPS”, or Volunteers in Police Services. Ottawa Police Chief, Adam Weingartner, says they are in action during the summer months:
