A Paola man was found dead in a boat on the shore of Hillsdale Lake Tuesday night, August 22. The Miami County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call for an unresponsive person in a boat on the shore of Hillsdale Lake at 8:11. The caller said a boat had been beached on the shore and the person in the boat was unresponsive. Because the location was so remote, it had to be accessed by water.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Johnson County Fire District Number One responded to the scene with their boats with deputies and Miami County Emergency Medical Services personnel onboard. Forty eight year-old Cass Douglas was pronounced dead on the scene. The cause of his death remains under investigation, however, foul play is not suspected.
