To celebrate Kansas students going back to school, Governor Laura Kelly ceremonially signed House Substitute for Senate Bill 113. With the Governor’s line-item veto of provisions that would have cut funding for districts across the state, including Seaman, the legislation fully funds schools for the fifth year in a row after nearly a decade of chronic underfunding under the previous administration. Kelly says it’s the rural schools that are the hearts and economic engines of our rural communities, and thus, of our entire state. She says she will continue fighting to protect public schools so they have the resources to give students a quality education.
Kelly says the work isn’t done, when legislators return in 2024, they have to figure out how to put Kansas on the path to fully fund special education. While the bill includes a $7.5 million increase in funding for special education, it does not include the $72 million Governor Kelly called for throughout the legislative session.
