The city of Osawatomie is really pushing to get John Brown Park and the cabin designated as a National Park. The effort centers around Harpers Ferry, and John Brown’s failed attempt to lead an uprising of the slaves there. That area is now a national park and officials in Osawatomie say that without Osawatomie, John Brown’s home and the events that went on during the Bleeding Kansas era, there is no Harpers Ferry. Assistant City Manager, Samantha Moon:

Brown’s history preceded him. At Harpers Ferry, he was referred to as “Osawatomie” Brown. The people then knew his history and of what was going on in Bleeding Kansas that led up to the Civil War. Osawatomie officials would like more recognition and help in presenting the John Brown story to more people and keeping history alive, right here in Kansas.
