The Kansas food sales tax is about to get a bit smaller and potentially save Kansans a little bit of money. Governor Laura Kelly signed the “Axe the Food Tax” Legislation in May of 2022, dropping the tax from 6.5% to 4% on January first of this year.

On January first 2024, the tax will drop to 2%. The lower rate applies to food, food ingredients and certain prepared foods. Shoppers can expect to see two tax rates on their receipts, one for qualifying items and one for other items. Kelly says a family of four will save an average of $500 a year on their grocery bill once the tax is eliminated completely.
