The Garnett man who held law officers at bay for several hours in October in an armed standoff on North Oak Street, was in Anderson County District Court Tuesday, March 5th, for a preliminary hearing on two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and a charge of aggravated domestic battery and criminal threat in connection with the incident.

James Chambers was arrested October 21st of last year when officers say a domestic incident with his wife, in which he applied pressure to her neck, impending normal breathing and circulation, erupted into his barricading himself in his garage with a firearm. Chambers’ wife and children left the residence during the incident, but he refused to leave the garage for nearly six hours, until officers smashed in an overhead garage door and used tear gas rounds to subdue him. The purpose of a preliminary hearing is to review initial evidence and testimony to determine if enough evidence is present to warrant a trial in the case.

An arraignment on the charges was scheduled for 9:30, the morning of March 25th, in Anderson County District Court.
