The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says some people are in danger of being duped by fake KBI agents. They have issued a warning letting people know they are being impersonated by scammers. This scheme involves scammers pretending to be KBI agents who are using lies to steal money from their victims. In these calls the scammer is identifying themselves as detectives or agents with the KBI, or from the offender registry. They are seeking payment to close a criminal case.

The KBI reminds people that you will NEVER receive an unexpected call from the KBI, making a request for your social security number, credit card information, date of birth or other personal information. Never give personal information or transfer funds over the phone unless you initiated the call to a known agency or service. If the caller is urgent or is acting suspicious, hang up. Look up the published number for the agency or service and call to verify whether the call was legitimate.
