The man who was driving the wrong way on I-35 early Sunday morning, April 28th, near Edgerton that crashed head on into a semi, killing his passenger, is facing murder charges in Johnson County.

The Johnson County District Attorney’s office accused 27-year-old Matthew Karabas of first and second-degree murder, as well as DUI and fleeing a police officer. A passenger in Karabas’ vehicle, identified as 22-year-old Eric Diaz, of Melbourne, Forida, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Karabas was taken to Overland Park Regional with suspected serious injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to KHP. The semi truck driver was not hurt. The crash happened just before 3:20 Sunday morning.
