The latest Kansas Crime Index Report released, says violent crime decreased in the state in 2023. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation released the report which compiles crime statistics reported to the KBI by state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state. According to the data, violent crime in Kansas decreased by 3.7% from 2022 and showed declines in each category of violent crime.
KBI’s report says a total of 13,294 violent crimes were reported in Kansas for offenses of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault and battery. Despite the 2023 decline, KBI said violent crime in the state remained 8.6% above the 10-year average.
While the violent crime analysis was positive, a property crime analysis revealed overall property crimes increased by 2.6% in 2023. That breaks a multi-year trend and marks the first time since 2017 the state experienced an uptick in property crime reports. The KBI says property crime offenses are assumed to be underreported to law enforcement.
