Yesterday was a somber anniversary for local law enforcement, particularly the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The day marked 14 years since Deputy Sam Smith died in a tragic traffic accident. Sheriff Jeff Richards talks about Sam Smith.
Smith was killed in a car crash on July 23rd, 2010 while responding to an emergency call. The Ottawa Police Department has had one officer die in the line of duty. Captain Robert Cowden died of a heart attack in 1963 while assisting with riot control in Garnett.
