An Ottawa juvenile is recovering after receiving severe burns Tuesday, August 6. The Ottawa Police Department was dispatched to AdventHealth Ottawa after the juvenile arrived to be treated for significant burns to their body. Through the investigation, it was learned that three juveniles were playing with ignitable liquids in the ten hundred block of South Olive Street, behind apartments at “t”The Oaks at Canterbury Court”. They lit items on fire and put them down a storm drain. The injured juvenile added more flammable liquids to the storm drain and the resulting fire flashed out of the drain and severely injured them. They were able to run home and a parent immediately transported them to the emergency room. One person was eventually transported to a Kansas City area hospital for treatment.
They are expected to recover but have burns over a substantial area of their body. Police Chief Adam Weingartner says the incident could have ended in worse tragedy. He adds the youth has a long road to recover and while he is thankful no one else was injured, he wishes no one had to go through the experience.
