What do you think when you hear “super harvest blood moon”? Maybe a horror movie title to some. But, no fright night involved, it could actually make for an awesome evening. The harvest moon, arriving tomorrow, September 18th, is the name given to the moon closest to the Autumn Equinox. But this year, it’s going to be a supermoon, meaning it’s going to be as close to the earth as it can get, causing the moon to look bigger and brighter than normal. But there’s more! It’s also a blood moon, which occurs during a partial or complete eclipse. The earth blocks the sun from fully lighting the moon, causing the sun’s light to curl around the earth’s magnetic field. The field filters the sun’s light, leaving mostly light from the red part of the color spectrum, thus turning the moon red. So, tonight, you have a full moon, as close as it can get, plus a partial eclipse that will turn it reddish.
Don’t get freaked out about the big ball of blood in the sky tonight. It will reach its maximum about 9:47. Someone take a picture, and send it to me, I’ll be asleep.
