The Ottawa City Commission issued a proclamation recognizing Fire Prevention Week, as October 6th through the 9th. Ottawa Fire Chief Shawn Dillon noted that over the past 10 years there has been a 4% reduction in the number of home fires, averaging 360,000 fires a year, but, a 1% increase in the number of fire deaths, with 2,726 last year. Wilson added that the department is in the schools this week and next teaching students the importance of fire safety. KOFO will have much more information from the Ottawa Fire Department regarding fire prevention and safety in the upcoming weeks.
