A woman was attacked on the Prairie Spirit Trail Thursday morning, October 10th, near Garnett. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is holding 33 year-old Porfirio De La Cruz, in connection with an alleged aggravated battery incident, about 10:00 on the Prairie Spirit Trail north of Garnett. Officers say Cruz, who was on a bicycle on the trail, interrupted another rider, a 64 year-old female, and assaulted her near 32241 NE Neosho Road. The woman was apparently able to fight off the attacker and escaped to the home of a neighbor who rendered aid and called 911. De La Cruz was apprehended a short time later in the area.
A sheriff’s office report says the woman suffered lacerations but was not severely injured. De La Cruz is a local resident with local employment. Officials are determining his immigration status. He was being held in the Anderson County Jail Friday morning pending charges.
