You can have buffalo roaming your yard, if you like…the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is auctioning off 66 head of bison soon. Yes, i know there’s a difference between bison and buffalo, but, play along, ok? The auction will be at the Central Kansas Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is managed specifically to preserve the area’s prairie heritage. Herds of bison and elk are maintained with both species being native to Kansas Grasslands. However, the refuge can only support a certain number of each, therefore excess bison are sometimes sold at public auction.
If you are a buyer, be ready to take the bison home that day. They will help you load them, and, don’t just bring your pickup, thinking you can haul it home in the bed of the truck. They suggest bringing a trailer that is covered, or lined as the beasts travel best in dark conditions.. The auction will be held November 6th at 11:00 at the Maxwell refuge, about 6 miles north of Canton in McPherson County about an hour west of Emporia on 56 Highway. Yes, you can have….a home on the range…
