Four words that no parent ever wants to hear…”your child has cancer.” But, every year, the parents of 15,000 kids will hear those words. Each year, an estimated 400 000 children and adolescents 0-19 years old, develop cancer around the world. Across all ages, ethnic groups, and socio-economics, this disease remains the number one cause of death by disease in children. In the last 40 years, the overall survival rate for childhood cancer has increased from 10% to over 85% today, but for many more rare childhood cancers, the survival rate remains much lower.
We all know someone that has had a child diagnosed with cancer. Many of you may be familiar with Alex’s lemonade stand or Asher’s storm troopers. The organization was founded to bring awareness to, and raise funds for childhood cancer research. It was founded by former Ottawan Shannon Leonard, who lost her son Asher to cancer 12 years ago.
The KOFO Cancer Awareness Telethon is today, October 25th, benefiting the Franklin County Cancer foundation. Give us a call, make a pledge, request a song, and for that donation, we’ll play any song you want to hear. You can find a link to Asher’s Stormtroopers on KOFO’s facebook page.
