Kansas lawmakers in Washington and other members of the Senate AG Committee, are not happy with Democrat Senate Agriculture Chairman Debbie Stabenow. According to Senator Roger Marshall, she blindsided the Republicans on the bipartisan AG committee dropping a 1,400-page farm bill with no advance notice or cooperation. Marshall says the move shows that Senate Democrats have walked away from meaningful bipartisan negotiations that are a tradition in this committee and have opted to play politics with the livelihoods of hard-working farmers and ranchers at a time when rural America needs real solutions.
Senator Moran called the move disappointing, to say the least and a missed opportunity, adding the need to focus on negotiations for a natural disaster and economic assistance supplemental for farmers and ranchers who have suffered from high input costs and low commodity prices along with drought. Another extension of the last farm bill is likely as the legislative session’s days are numbered this year.
