Many people have already started decorating for the Christmas holiday. Time to break out the cheap power strips and extension cords and light up the neighborhood, right? Well, maybe not. . but, before you put up the lights, you need to be aware of some safety items. Twenty-four thousand electrical fires occur every year in the U. S., many around the holidays, and Christmas lights are one of the major causes of home fires during the holiday season. John Shull of the National Fire Marshal Association says finding the correct extension cord and the right lights are crucial.
He also suggests you check all your outlets and make sure each one you are using has snug fitting plugs and plates that are not broken and upgrade the light strands to LED to save money on energy cost.
