There are a lot of animals you can get away with jumping on. A polar bear? Not likely one you are thinking of. A man is recovering after he leapt onto a polar bear to prevent it from mauling his wife in their driveway in far North Ontario Canada, and it worked! But, the bear attacked the man instead. The bear was in the driveway and lunged at the woman as they got in their car. She fell to the ground and her husband jumped on top of it to protect her. He suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries to his arms and legs in the attack. His neighbor had a better idea on how to get the bear. He stepped out and shot the bear several times, killing it.
The man is expected to recover and officials are praising his heroic instincts. Polar bears rarely attack humans. When it does happen, it’s usually because the bear is hungry, young or unwell. But wildlife officials say if you are attacked, definitely don’t play dead, that’s a myth. Fight as long as you can.
