Today marks the 83rd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. President Franklin Roosevelt spoke to congress the following day:
In the attack, over 4,000 U. S. soldiers were either killed or wounded and nearly the entire United States Pacific Naval fleet destroyed with over 1,100 going down with the USS Arizona alone.
The last survivor of the Arizona, Louis Conter, died last year at the age of 102. Fewer than two dozen survivors of the Pearl Harbor Attack are still alive in 2024. As most are now well into their 90’s or older, the number of living World War II Veterans continue to dwindle. Remember to tell your children and grandchildren and if you see a veteran, stop and thank them for their service.
