The Kansas Highway Patrol warns that people should exercise caution when buying a vehicle online through places like Facebook Marketplace. Many times, these are cloned vehicles– meaning its identifying features like VIN’s have been changed to hide its identity. Meaning, it’s probably stolen. Cloned vehicles are often listed way below fair market value. It seems like a good deal; but, a reasonable person would not sell a vehicle at such a discounted price. Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The KHP says a seller only accepting cash should be a red flag, as cash can’t be traced. They also say to be very cautious of out-of-state titles. You many know what a Kansas title looks like, but be unfamiliar with other states. Finally, make sure the sale is in a safe, neutral location and you take someone with you. Also, ask for the sellers ID and trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy about it, walk away.
