The Kansas State Parks System is encouraging people to enjoy New Year’s Day with a First-Day Hike at a Kansas State Park. State Parks Director Linda Lanterman says the First-Day Hikes are self-led and self-guided. They also vary in distance and rigor.

Flint Hills Trail State Park is on the list of First-Day hikes. The trail is listed as easy in difficulty. Residents are asked to bring a bike for riding down the trail, which continues across Lyon and Osage Counties east to Osawatomie and into Franklin County and Ottawa. Also on the list, Pomona State Park. The trail is listed as easy.

People wanting to go on a First-Day hike should bring water, sacks, weather-appropriate clothes, hiking shoes, a hiking stick, binoculars and a camera. People who want to bring a pet on a First-Day Hike can do so, but need to keep them on leashes. First-Day Hike is part of a national program that’s sponsored by America’s State Parks.
