Many people woke yesterday to frozen water pipes. So, how do you protect them from the frigid cold and keep them from freezing? If you can, wrap your pipes in some type of heating tape, or insulation. Make sure to use good extension cords to plug it in. Inside your house, open the bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulated around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners or chemicals up and out of children’s reach.

To keep the water flowing through your pipes, let the water drip or slow run from the faucet that serves the exposed pipes, even a trickle will help prevent the pipes from freezing. Another tip, if you usually lower your thermostat at night, during the cold, keep it at the same temperatures as you would during the day, preferably at or above 65 degrees. You might end up with a slightly higher heating bill, but prevent a costly repair job if your pipes would freeze and burst. One more tip…keep your garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
