Anderson County Commissioners approved a bid of $2.51 per gallon for off-road diesel, saving quite a bit of money. The largest volume of fuel used by the road department for its maintenance equipment will be received from Leroy co-op. That contract runs throughout 2025, and is a 9% savings over the $2.74 price contracted for 2024. Diesel nationwide averaged around $4 this time last year, and is in decline analysts say because demand is down– possibly due to higher costs going back to the end of 2023 and other economic factors.

Figures on total gallons used by the road department in recent years was not immediately available, but Road Director Ethan Lickteig said that figure would depend on a number of annual factors. The county road department is the biggest expense in county government, its anticipated 2025 budget of $3.98 million amounting to about 26% of the county’s overall $15.2 million approved spending plan for the year. Fluctuating prices of fuel make up a substantial portion of that department’s expenses.

The average price for unleaded gasoline in the United States on Wednesday, January 8th was $3.06 a gallon, and $2.68 in Kansas.
