Do you see the cold weather that’s on the way? Heading to Florida to escape the cold? You’ll have to go wa-a-ay south, as a cold front will plummet temps in Florida soon, as well. Not as cold as here, but enough to affect people and some animals. The National Weather Service has issued a “falling iguana watch” in Florida. What? That’s right! It’s falling iguana season. As temperatures drop along the Gulf Coast and southeast Florida, cold-stunned iguanas are likely to fall out of the trees, after losing their grip on the branches. Residents are warned that the reptiles appear to be dead, but they’re just sleeping. Fully grown iguanas can be up to five feet long and up to 25 pounds, so imagine walking down the sidewalk and having that land on you? Kind of dangerous! Officials suggest avoiding areas with trees.
Professional iguana removers, (yes they have those in Florida) warn against handling the lethargic animals, saying they can become defensive when they warm up; plus, their droppings can contain salmonella; but, don’t you have to ingest salmonella?
