Recently the U. S. House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act, which Derek Schmidt co sponsored as one of his first actions as a member of congress. Schmidt says it is a first step in fixing the border crisis and adds that as Attorney General in Kansas, he saw many cases of illegal immigrants with prior lesser offenses, committing violent crimes and it is unacceptable. He encouraged the senate to quickly pass the bill and have it ready for President Trump to sign.
Laken Riley was a 22-year old college student who was tragically murdered by an illegal immigrant in February of last year. The Laken Riley Act requires that illegal immigrants who commit property crimes are detained for deportation. The goal is to prevent criminal offenders from committing more severe crimes against U. S. citizens. It also allows state attorneys general to sue federal immigration officials who refuse to comply with federal immigration law, ensuring that states can protect their citizens, regardless of presidential administration.
