We know a little bit more about the fire that destroyed a home in Garnett last week. Thursday morning, January 16th, just after 6:00, the call came in as a structure fire. First responders saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the two story residence, and that led to some heroics.
Anderson County Sheriff’s Deputy Alex Jones and Garnett Police Department Officer Clay Perina, rushed into the burning home without hesitation, successfully rescuing an occupant and leading them to safety. Fire crews battled the fire for many hours. The fire was investigated by the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, however, cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. Fire Chief Wes Skillman says there is no foul play suspected in this case. The home is a complete loss.
A huge thank you to Deputy Alex Jones and Officer Clay Perina for their actions. Their quick thinking and bravery not only saved a life but also exemplified the true spirit of service in the community. The next time you see an officer, deputy, firefighter or any first responder, give them a big thank you for risking their lives to save yours.
