Veterans are 50 percent% more likely to commit suicide than non-veterans. With their access to firearms, the risk is even higher for veterans. The Paola American Legion’s “Be The One” Mission worked with the Veterans Administration, the Columbia Lighthouse Project, and Veterans Outdoors Foundation for a suicide awareness workshop and prevention training recently at the Paola American Legion.

Cara Murray, a Veteran Affairs Suicide Prevention Coordinator, spoke about risk factors and protective factors. Risk factors include prior suicide attempts, mental health issues, substance abuse, recent loss, legal or financial challenges, relationship issues, unemployment and homelessness. Murray says when they own a firearm, the risk is even greater. She says they want to minimize their risk factors and maximize the protective factors,”

Doug Hensley, American Legion Miami Post 156 Commander and Chairman of the Department of Kansas “Be The One” committee, says he and his fellow officers work to conduct “buddy checks” on local veterans. He hoped the training will help community members notice the signs and learn how to help.
