It’s night vision coyote season. Never heard of it? The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks says as thermal and night vision scopes have come down in price, applications have gone way up. Coyote season runs year-round but night vision and thermal season is limited from January 1st through March 31st . A free permit is required with a small fee so officials can track coyote numbers. Wildlife officials say the wily coyotes have long known better than to charge at calls during daylight hours. Now they are adjusting to night hunts and it has become more difficult to get them closer than a few hundred yards., so, you need to be a good shot and be careful where you are shooting.

Some hunters are able to harvest 10-15 coyotes a night. Kansas has seen a huge uptick of coyote numbers since the 1980s. In 2021, populations were estimated at 300,000 animals during parts of the year. They can be found in all Kansas counties, however, they are most populous in the eastern two-thirds of the state.
