Congressman Derek Schmidt introduced a bipartisan bill, alongside two others congressmen, to support American pet food manufacturers. Schmidt introduced the Pet Food Uniform Regulatory Reform, or, PURR Act of 2025. The bill sets uniform criteria for dog and cat pet food and pet food labels. According to Kansas Commerce, pet food manufacturers in the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor represent 61% of the total pet food sold in the United States. Schmidt’s District has several pet food manufacturing and processing plants. Schmidt says outdated, overbearing, and unnecessarily complicated regulations have stifled production and ingenuity across all American industries, including pet food. The PURR Act provides a solution. By instituting uniform, streamlined pet food standards, we’ll be empowering businesses to succeed while ensuring that American pet owners have access to quality and nutritious food for their pets.
Over 66% of American households own a pet, and most want healthy food for them. The bill would cut red tape and streamline the system by granting sole authority to the FDA to regulate the labeling and marketing of pet food.
