Saturday, February 1st, was National Unclaimed Property Day and Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson reminds Kansans of his office’s ongoing efforts to return unclaimed funds. His office holds more that 605 million dollars in unclaimed property. He urges everyone to check on their status several times a year, as they are constantly adding new claims. It’s estimates that nearly 33 million people in the United States has unclaimed property: financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for a number of years. When that happens, and the company cannot locate the owner, the money or properties are submitted to the state. Common examples include unpaid life insurance benefits, stocks, bonds, forgotten bank accounts and safe deposit boxes.
Johnson says Kansans can search for such property…for free…through the state treasurer’s website “unclaimedproperty.ks.gov.”
It’s worth the search, i do it a couple times a year and recently, I had a claim for the first time. Granted, it was only a refund check for $9, but, that’s nine bucks I didn’t have before.
