Yesterday, Kansas Democratic leaders announced their support for raising the minimum wage in the Sunflower State to $15 per hour. The announcement followed plans on Monday by Kansas Republican leaders, including Senate President Ty Masterson, to eliminate taxes on tips in the state. Democratic leaders countered with a proposal to hike the state’s minimum wage in a news release from Governor Laura Kelly’s office. The statement said that Masterson’s proposal will do nothing to make eggs more affordable for Kansans, so they were proposing something that will.
Democrats says that raising the minimum wage to $15 will put more money in people’s pockets and there was no reason people in Kansas should be making less than people in Missouri, and the most important thing lawmakers can do for minimum wage workers is to increase the wage. As of now, Kansas’ minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, while Missouri’s minimum wage is $13.75 an hour.
