A man was seriously injured early yesterday, February 5th, in a single-vehicle rollover crash on an icy highway in Miami County. The crash was reported at 6:45 yesterday morning on northbound U. S.-169 highway about 7 miles north of Paola. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a sport utility vehicle driven by 20-year-old Brian Shaffer, of Osawatomie was northbound on U. S.-169 in the left lane when he made a lane change while going over an icy bridge. He lost control of the vehicle in the right lane, crossed the left lane and overturned in the median. Shaffer was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Also yesterday, while working a crash, a Miami County Sheriff’s Deputy was rear-ended by another vehicle. The roadway was slick at the time. The occupants of the impacting vehicle sustained no injuries, while the deputy was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. The sheriff’s department says the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of slowing down during inclement weather and providing ample space for emergency personnel and road crews to safely perform their duties.
