Although they wear different uniforms, the military is united as one team with one fight for our freedom. Governor Laura Kelly proclaimed yesterday, February 11th, as Armed Forces Appreciation Day. She also signed a proclamation designating March 29th as Vietnam War Veterans Day. Kelly met with commanders from the Kansas National Guard, Fort Leavenworth, Fort Riley, McConnell Air Force Base and the U.S. Coast Guard Pay Center in Topeka. Five National Guardsmen were also honored with awards for their dedication and sacrifice to Kansas. Kansas Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Mike Venerdi says they don’t do this for recognition they do this out of service and patriotism.

Among those honored was Tech. Sgt. Rachel Pence, Topeka, as Honor Guard Member of the Year. Sgt. Pence says the honor was unexpected and she was very surprised but glad for the opportunity. Governor Kelly recognized the Kansas military installations that contribute over $5 billion annually to the state.
