Kalmar Ottawa has introduced the third generation electric terminal tractor. The vehicle was introduced at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s 2025 Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition in Nashville yesterday, March 11th. The Ottawa T-2 EV is the third in a line of electric terminal trucks produced at Kalmar in Ottawa since 2018.
President of Terminal Tractors at Kalmar, Thor Brenden, says engineers in Ottawa have evaluated every aspect of the T-2 to make it the most efficient machine possible and that solution was to electrify the market leading T-2. It was fully designed and built in house at the company plant in Ottawa . There are four different models available – two specifically designed for container ports and terminals and two for distribution applications, including an on-road version available for North America.
One of the interesting features is that it does not have a transmission. The tractor motor goes directly to the rear axle and, the new model has zero emissions. It is also tested for extreme condition anywhere from 22 below zero to 122 degrees above, as well as special charging connectors enabling fast charging in under an hour allowing, for the opportunity of charging as needed.
The facility in Ottawa has been producing trucks since 1959, introducing the world’s first terminal tractor that year, producing over 85,000 units–more than all competitors combined.
