An Osawatomie 2-year-old was taken to the hospital in critical condition after reportedly ingesting methamphetamine. Osawatomie police officers were called to 520 Pacific Avenue just before midnight Tuesday, regarding a 2-year-old girl in medical distress. While enroute, officers were informed the child was having a seizure due to the ingestion of an unknown amount of methamphetamine. Upon arrival, officers found the child in critical condition, and she was immediately transported by Miami County Emergency Medical Services to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

According to Osawatomie Police Chief, David Stuteville, during the investigation, officers applied for and received a search warrant for the home. During the search, officers discovered a small amount of marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia, and methamphetamine paraphernalia. Officers also learned during the investigation that the biological mother, in fear of getting into trouble, never called for medical attention for the child and, instead, flushed evidence down the toilet.

Authorities were initially contacted by a grandparent. Thirty-four-year-old Jacci Marie Hays was taken into custody on charges of aggravated child endangerment; interference with law enforcement; conceal/alter/destroy evidence in a felony case; possession of drug paraphernalia; and possession of marijuana, according to the release. The case is still under investigation.
