Sometime last week, Franklin County Honors, who put up the displays for Veterans Day, including all the flags that line Main Street and City Park, had their trailer stolen from the VFW parking lot. The theft was discovered Wednesday, April 16th. The honors group was devastated as nearly 500 flags were missing.

They put out a social media post asking for help. Ironically, the same day, a man in Douglas County posted a picture of what he called hundreds of American flags that he had found dumped in his field. Could they be the same flags? Absolutely! Franklin County Honors Representatives contacted the man and have since retrieved them and are going through the cleaning process of each flag.

Shane Munsch found the flags strewn across his filed in Douglas County and say he can’t imaging who would do such a thing. Comment on social media posts on the theft ranged from anger to pity. One veteran I spoke to said he was in shock that anyone would do such a disrespectful thing to the American flag, adding that it disrespected him and every veteran whoever served our country.

For now, Franklin County Honors is just happy to have the flags back. The trailer however, is still missing. If you have any information about the theft of the trailer or know where it might be, please call the Ottawa Police Department.
