The Anderson County Commission heard from transportation consultants from the southeast Kansas Regional Planning Commission who detailed recommendations to improve traffic safety and how to access federal money to make improvements to local roads. The study was completed last fall and found that the primary threat to drivers in the region was leaving the roadway. The same is true in Anderson County . It seems drivers just miss curves and run off the road. Signs, marking curves and upcoming hazards and other additions like rumble strips can help reduce these accidents and could be covered by federal money if the grant applications were successful. Anderson County’s plan will be a part of a composite plan for the region, and commissioners will be asked to endorse it with a resolution of support when it is complete.

Anderson County has an average of two fatalities per year, with 90% of all fatalities coming on only 13% of the county’s established roadways.
