Back in January, KOFO aired a conversation with 59th District Representative Rebecca Schmoe about issues facing the Kansas Legislature in the, then, upcoming legislative session. When asked about legalizing medical marijuana, she said:
She was pretty much right, only a few bills on the issue were introduced during the session, not one of them had a hearing or a vote. Kansas Democratic Representative, Silas Miller from Wichita, says 70% of Kansans support medical cannabis legalization, while 60% also support recreational legalization. He introduced one of those bills that would legalize and regulate cannabis, but it went nowhere. He says Republican Legislators have told him many in their district support it, but leadership in the house and senate are adamantly opposed to it, both medical and recreational. So, for now, Kansas will remain one of just a few states that still outlaws marijuana, joining Wyoming, Idaho, and South Carolina as the only states that fully criminalize marijuana in the state.
